The World Heritage Pathway Capacity-Building Programme
Supporting SIDS and Vulnerable Countries on the Road to World Heritage Nomination Readiness
Many Small Island Developing States and vulnerable countries hold cultural, natural, coastal, marine, and landscape heritage of potential global significance. Yet many of these countries face practical challenges in preparing for the UNESCO World Heritage pathway, including limited technical capacity, lack of trained national experts, weak documentation systems, climate-related heritage risks, and limited access to international heritage networks.
The World Heritage Pathway Capacity-Building Programme, led by the Chartered Culture and Education Institute (CCEI) and sponsored by the Republic of Azerbaijan, has been designed to support SIDS and vulnerable countries in strengthening their early-stage readiness for the World Heritage Tentative List and nomination process.
This programme helps countries move from heritage potential toward a more structured, credible, and nationally owned World Heritage readiness pathway.
Form 1: Country Expression of Interest
For Tentative List and Nomination-Readiness Support
This form is for countries that wish to be considered for the first stage of targeted technical support.
In the first stage, 3–5 countries will be selected for deeper engagement. Selected countries may receive support for Tentative List review or preparation, identification of potential heritage sites, preliminary Outstanding Universal Value development, in-country or hybrid training of national experts, and readiness analysis of management, protection, institutional, and climate-related issues.
This form should be completed by an authorized government institution, national heritage authority, World Heritage focal point, or relevant public body.
Submitting the form does not guarantee selection, but it allows the programme team to understand your country’s heritage priorities, institutional commitment, current readiness, and capacity-building needs.
Complete Form 1 if your country wants to be considered for Tentative List and nomination-readiness support.
